The Yacht’s Story
Morning Tide completed in many events including:
- 11 Sydney to Hobart races (cat 1)
- 10 Gosford to Lord Howe races (cat 1)
- 6 Sydney to Gold Coast races (cat 2)
- 6 Pittwater to Coffs Harbour races (cat 2)
- Cruised and raced to Lord Howe Island 21 times
She was tragically lost at sea on 12th June 2012 when she began taking on water at night in heavy seas. It is understood the problem was a break in the rudder post housing, but by the time this could be located it was too late to save the boat and Allen and his crew were winched to safety before the yacht sank off the NSW coast. She is the only Australian built S&S 34 not to be still afloat today.
About the Owners
Jim Lawler was the previous owner of Morning Tide and sailed from Sydney Amateurs and completed several Sydney – Hobarts. Jim unfortunately was drowned when the Winston Churchill went down in that very bad Sydney – Hobart.

I’m very sad to read of the lose of both Morning Tide and Jim Lawler.
I raced with Jim aboard Morning Tide in a Gosford-Lord Howe Race when I was working as a rigger at Noakes Rigging and it set the stage for me to join Maiden in the 1989-90 Whitbread around the world race and a life at sea.
