I've decided to convert to a new modern 29HP Yanmar with saildrive.
Does anyone have any experience in where exactly a saidrive should be mounted
Looking at the modern SS34's with the Nanni 20hp engine they seem to have the front of the box just infront of the main rear bulkhead
These engines are about 150kg - where are other bulky weights such as batteries, fuel and water tanks best put?
How big a fuel tank should I look for (I still want to be able to race offshore casually - not seriously) I'd like to be able to motorsail Melbourne to Sydney on one tank without jumping too many bars to refuel (although Batemans bay is an OK stopover)
Has anyone done the glass in the bed job and cut a hole in the bottom?
Is there a right way to remove the prop shaft and block up the through hulls?
And then what is the best prop for a saildrive- Kiwi (cheaper via UK than across the ditch or ocally), folding or feathering
One choice to change something and so much fun to be had.

Hi Paul, I have an old Yanmar 2gm shaft drive which sits just forward of the cockpit bulkhead, use the cover as a step comping into the cabin. Fuel (60l) and water (60l) are on the starboard side aft of the mast. the batteries (2) are on the port side just aft of the mast and another 60l of water further aft. I'm thinking of getting a Yanmar 3ym20 to replace the 2gm. Did you you end up getting the engine from the Singapore

I know I'm way late to this thread, but I installed a 29 hp 3ym30 with a saildrive on Calliope Girl. If you look in the directory there is actually a picture showing the engine bed being glassed in. Been very happy with it overall. We removed the old prop shaft and filled the hole with a giant wooden dowel and epoxied that in place to plug it up. Hope your project went well.
