S&S34 Newsletter August 2003 - There is Movement at Cottesloe Yachts
By Colin Sanders
The disabled solo circumnavigation challenge is underway with the construction of a new S&S 34 at Cottesloe Yachts. Following considerable discussion on how such a challenge could be mounted for a paraplegic yachtsman - Royal Perth's Gold Medallist from the Sydney Paralympic Games in the "Sonar" class - Jamie Dunross is to get a modified S&S 34 to facilitate the achievement of his goal. But Jamie is not rushing into this adventure, first he is training with others to defend Australia's title in the Athens International Disabled Sailing games next year following the Olympics. He then intends in September 2005 to embark on his circumnavigation quest. He is being very carefull in all the detailed planning.
Glen Swarbrick of Cottesloe Yachts is building the new 34 to include a track-mounted seat to enable Jamie to move in and out of the cabin and around the deck so that he can access the bow. The S&S 34s bright yellow (safety coloured) hull has already been laid-up and was displayed at the recent Perth Boat, Dive and Fishing Show. . The hull as it appears at the show (named Spirit of Rockingham - the suburb 20km south of Perth where Jamie has lived most of his life). It is understood that Spirit of Rockingham will be a very innovative yacht having in its inventory a range of special equipment to cater for a disabled sailor. Jamie has limited movements and the yacht will need electric sail handling equipment and winches. It is understood that Jamie has commenced training already in another S&S 34 in addition to his games commitments which he is undertaking through Royal Perth Yacht Club. Moreover he is the skipper of the W A Paralympic sailing team. The Solo 1 project is estimated to cost around $380,000.
Further sponsors and supporters are needed. You can indicate your contribution in this regard through the S&S 34 Association.
