104 (Swarbrick's records show it could be either 103 or 104, and known history makes it likely to be 104). The bare boat was built in perth in 1981 and sent to Sydney to be fitted out by Maybrook marine. This was beautifully done by maybrook. |

The Yacht's Story

Maid of Erin passed survey without a hitch and she is real credit to Doug. She’s a lovely boat in superb condition. We feel for Doug and hope that he has the opportunity to buy another S&S at some stage in the future. In the meantime I hope that he will take up my offer to come down to Tassie and sail Maid sometime. When I walked along the marina walkway and first saw Maid, it was love at first sight, which is probably a familiar story for S&S34 owners. Interestingly, the web site had a part to play, since about 12 months ago I looked at all the photos in the catalogue and wrote down 2 or 3 that I thought looked like the lovely classic S&S34. You guessed it – one of them was Maid! though I didn’t realize until I saw the piece of paper on my desk when I got home. Myself and my brother Wes both sailed with the late Reg Escott on both Solandras so we have been impressed with the S&S34 since we were kids.From Doug Grewar:
"Maid of Erin" (my wife is Irish) has spent the last 5 years in Far North Queensland and in New Guinea before we purchased her in September 2004. I believe she spent some time in Adelaide and on the NSW coast before that. If anyone knows of this boat and its history I would be grateful for further information.
The boat was originally called "Adios" and may have been fitted out in the East after the hull and deck were transported from WA.
About the Owners

Let me introduce myself.
We are a family of boat-owners from many generations. Our previous boat that we sadly sold in December we owned for 15 years. She was a 12 ton 60 year-old wooden classic double-ended sloop, Kurura, a veteran of many Sydney-Hobart races. She became a bit much for me to look after in the end.
Maid will be owned and sailed by the Imms family, comprising grandfather (a shipwright) and grandmother, me and my family, my brother and his family, my daughters and their husbands (and one great-grandchild) and a new partner Mike Edwards and wife Jean from Scotland. There will be 4 generations on board Maid at different times (and occasionally all at the one time!). She will be sailed out of Kettering, near Hobart, mostly from Research Bay in the south to Wineglass Bay in the north. Each summer we do a roll-on-roll-off thing on the east coast, basing ourselves at Triabunna. Maid of Erin will be sailed all year round as was Kurura and I’m confident that she will be just as well-loved.
We are looking forward to sailing her down from Sydney in May. I’ll let you know how we get on.

Being an ex West Aussie and having a love affair with the S&S 34 spanning 20 years I have finally achieved one of my lifetime goals, to own one. IOR racing and cruising off WA Coast in the 80's (Fremantle and Esperance "Pilgrim" S&S 39 now Perie Banou II) the S&S lines, seagoing ability have left an indelible mark on my sailing career. Maid of Erin sails in Moreton Bay, short handed, dodging sandbars, low tides turtles, dugongs etc practicing far bluer waters, and far flung lands.
